AUSTRALIA’S video game industry is worth almost $3 billion with a new report revealing the trend of double digit growth continues.
The report shows Australians continue to love their game consoles but mobile games played on smartphones and tablets are now the biggest sector.
The Interactive Games & Entertainment Association report released today shows that sales of interactive games in Australia was $2.83 billion last year, which was a 15 per cent hike on the previous year.
The swing, not surprisingly, has gone to online sales. The report shows digital sales of games jumped by 27 per cent to $1.589 billion with bricks-and-mortar sales making just a two per cent rise to $1.234 billion.
The report attributes the continuing strong figures to the rapid adoptions of the latest PlayStation and Xbox consoles although research firm Telsyte found that mobile games are the biggest slice of the games market.
Key highlights from the report are:
• Nearly two thirds of game units sold were G, PG or M rated.
• Sales revenue of console games grew by 13 per cent.
• Digital sales of games now make up 56 per cent of total sales.
