The district policerecovered four mobiles (non-smartphones), two chargers, electrical wires and mobile battery during a search at Modern Jail, Faridkot on the intervening night Monday and Tuesday.

The raid was conducted by Faridkot superintendent of police (headquarters) Deepak Pareek along with 100 police personnels. The raid went on for four hours.

Faridkot senior superintendent of police Nanak Singh confirmed the development. “We have started legal proceedings against the accused,” he said.

On May 6, pictures of birthday celebrations of gangster Bhola Shooter (Bharat Sharma), an undertrial lodged at the Farikdot Modern Jail for murder, were uploaded on Facebook by another gangster, Pala Brar (Parampal Singh Brar).

On May 7, action was initiated against six jail officials including assistant superintendent Mohinder Singh and jail warden Gurdeep Singh, who were on duty at the barracks in which gangsters were lodged.

The services of Jaswinder Singh, an employee with the Punjab Ex-servicemen Corporation (PESCO), has been terminated.

Faridkot deputy superintendent of jail Iqbal Singh Brar also wrote to the 9th Battalion seeking action against three constables posted in the jail.

In 2018 alone, 54 phones have been recovered. Jail authorities have also failed to keep a check on mobile phones being thrown inside jail premises from near the boundary wall.

“It is true that gangsters lodged in Faridkot jail use mobile phones to make extortion calls and to run a narcotics business. Inmates get access to mobiles, either when it is either thrown into jail premises or is slipped to them during their appearance in court,” a senior police official said.
