Emerging news providers can apply for the new Global News Gaps Project

Emerging news providers are becoming increasingly important in assisting individuals in remaining informed on the news that is significant to them, whether it be a social media journalist or a digital news startup. Many cover topics and local or language-based communities that are underreported — sometimes known as ‘news gaps’.

But with so many new entrants, it can be difficult to distinguish those producing helpful information. We want to collaborate with the news ecosystem to direct our interaction with and support for this expanding industry. We are launching the Global News Gaps Project with a number of partners to assist in addressing this issue by: WAN-IFRA, the lead industry association partner, is supporting the launch of the News Creators Project, a project led by FT Strategies to better understand news voices that primarily operate on social media and video platforms. Growing Project Oasis, a global effort that profiles over 1,000 news creators and 5,000 digital news organizations 150 will receive membership in WAN-IFRA and funding to build capacity, and 300 emerging news providers will receive training on Google products and strategic consultations to support long-term growth.
